By the end of his life in 1970, the British composer Cyril Scott had sunk into obscurity save for a few pieces that dangled tantalizingly on the fringes of classical repertory. The advent of the 21st century has ignited a rediscovery of this iconoclastic composer, and 'Dawn and Twilight' is a part of this movement premiering his first and last violin sonatas played with sensitivity and fantastic musical engagement with Andrew Kirkman on violin and Clipper Erickson on piano. Composed in 1910 and 1956 respectively, the sonatas permit a 'bookend' glimpse into Scott's musical development in the context of a classical music world almost completely transformed during this period. The first composed with a predictably youthful swagger premiered to accolades by Claude Debussy and Sonata Nr. 4 composed as Scott neared his eighth decade is permeated by the contemplative and mature perspectives of a lifetime of tenaciously prolific work despite the public acclaim that eluded him.

This EM Records release of British cello music performed by the Jenkinson Frith Duo presents World Première recordings by Cyril Scott, Ivor Gurney and Ian Venables: Cyril Scott’s monumental Cello Sonata is recorded here for the first time alongside Ivor Gurney’s unpublished one-movement Cello Sonata in E minor.
Cyril Scott’s Cello Sonata was composed in 1958 when the composer had just turned seventy; despite being a late work it is in no way autumnal, but is instead a dramatic four-movement piece that displays all the composer's mature fingerprints. Gurney’s mantle as one of England's finest composers of art songs is now extending to his orchestral and chamber music, of which this sonata is a fine example. Ian Venables, like Gurney, has not only made song a central part of his output but has also composed chamber works of equal beauty and intensity. As well as the early ‘Elegy’ and the later ‘Poem’ the other three works featured on this disc are transcriptions of two of his most evocative songs and a rhapsodic paraphrase of the song, ‘The Moon Sails Out’.

This is the debut CD of a very skilful and talented performer and includes a delightful composition of his own called 'Lullaby and Lament' (2013).
Works range from the 16th and 17th centuries including a Partita by J.S. Bach, originally written for solo flute, up to the present day with 'Na Zdrowie' (2004) by Annette Ziegenmeyer (b.1976).
Acting as a bridge between ancient and modern, is Cyril Scott's haunting 'The Extatic Shepherd' (1921), like the J.S.Bach, also originally written for flute.

Works for violin and piano are an important part of Cyril Scott’s chamber music. This disc presents three sonatas which span his output. The capricious and ruminative First Violin Sonata ranks among the most convincing and successful of his earlier large-scale compositions. Sonata Melodica is a more relaxed yet equally quixotic work, while the Third Violin Sonatais one of the most inventive from his later years. Dan Laurin has a reputation not just as a recorder virtuoso, but also for his great interest in and curiosity about the less well-known repertoire for the instrument. On disc he has performed not only staples such as concertos by Vivaldi and sonatas by Handel, but also earlier music – his recording of Jacob van Eyck’s monumental /Der Fluyten Lust-hof/ on nine discs has been called a standard to compare all others to’ (American Record Guide) – as well as contemporary works, many of which have been composed especially for him.
With Songs of Yesterday he opens up yet another, less familiar chapter in the history of recorder music: between 1939 and 1989 Carl Dolmetsch, the great pioneer in modern recorder playing, gave almost annual recitals at Wigmore Hall in London, for which he often commissioned works with piano or harpsichord accompaniment. In his introduction to the disc, Laurin remarks upon Dolmetsch’s ability to inspire composers to search for a contemporary idiom adequate for the instrument, resulting in an unparalleled number of top-quality works.
Among these, written by composers such as Cyril Scott, Edmund Rubbra and Lennox Berkeley, Laurin and his partner Anna Paradiso have selected seven pieces which give his instrument a rare opportunity to ‘sing like a French impressionist (Ravel, Debussy!) or a Russian modernist (Prokofiev!) – all of whom can be heard through the filter of this English, post-First World War melancholy longing.’

Pianist Leslie De'Ath's traverse of the vast piano music of Cyril Scott has received remarkable critical plaudits, and here he completes his survey in a two-CDs-for-the-price-of-one package (another wonderful Dutton Epoch bargain), which constitutes Volume Five. This may well turn out to be the most popular of the lot as it includes many of Scott's most celebrated numbers including Lotus Land.

Northern Lights, an album by cellist Emma Ferrand and pianist Jeremy Young, gets off on the right foot with a well-planned program of rarely (if ever) heard English cello sonatas. Tying all of these works together is the aftermath of the First World War and English cellist Carl Fuchs. Extremely active as a performer and pedagogue, Fuchs was a direct or indirect influence to each of the composers heard on this disc. The album opens with the surprisingly dark and ominous G minor Sonata of John Ireland, a work that will appear stunningly tumultuous and indulgent for listeners familiar with Ireland's more conservative vocal works. The disc continues with premiere recordings of a sonata by Edgar Baintonand a Ballade for Cello and Piano by Cyril Scott. Both of these works definitely lean toward the chromatically infused neo-Romantic, and, like the Ireland, are both rather indulgent compositions. By far the most successful and compelling piece on the program is the Rawsthorne Sonata.Rawsthorne's chamber music output was rather large, and this sonata demonstrates his keen insights into harmony and dialogue between the two instruments. Ferrand's performances of these somewhat obscure sonatas are good but not great. Intonation is often approximated and large shifts are completed with a slide so often that it becomes ineffective. Ferrand's sound is not as dominant as some might hope, often being obscured behind the piano. Still, cello enthusiasts will welcome the addition of new repertoire into their libraries.

Neither Roger Quilter nor Cyril Scott achieved the worldwide celebrity of their colleague Percy Grainger; though their names may be familiar to specialists in early twentieth century British music, little of their piano music has been heard for many decades. The taste for fin de siècle reveries changed dramatically after World War I, and Quilter's poetic parlor pieces were eclipsed in the advent of modernism. Such perfumed pleasantries as the Studies (3), the Pieces (3), and the Impressions (2) could not be taken seriously by the avant-garde, and even Quilter's Impressionism in the Country Pieces, Op. 27, seemed passé by 1923. Cyril Scott, however, employed modernist techniques in many of his works, and his mystical explorations for piano were more attuned to the growing European trend for harmonic ambiguity and atonality. Yet the Scriabin-esque flavor of Rainbow Trout and the Sonata No. 2 plainly dated his music, and Scott's reputation as the boldest of English composers dwindled over time. Pianist Clipper Erickson has performed a valuable service in reviving these forgotten pieces, and his performances are atmospheric and energetic, giving Scott and Quilter the benefit of sympathetic interpretations after too many years of neglect. Direct-to-Tape's recording is decent, though it sounds closer to a live recital tape than a studio production.

Roger Sacheverell Coke’s Violin Sonata in D minor is perhaps the most emotionally involved of the three offerings on the disc. Composed during the aftermath of the Second World War, its first two movements alternate soaring melodic lines of searing beauty with dark, introverted musings; in the grim Scherzo, figures loom like nightmarish megoliths; and the fourth movement’s anguished outpourings are an elegy for a generation. The Sonata is included on this recording by popular demand following its rapturous reception at the 2012 English Music Festival.
Thoroughly rewarding as musical discoveries and as performances. Marshall-Luck captures well the beguilingly dark tinge to Scott’s highly chromatic, post-Romantic, texturally dense Viola Sonata. And Sacheverell Coke’s wartime Violin Sonata nr 1, equally absorbing... receives an equally committed performance.

This recording features three vigorous, dramatic and colourful works by three unique, charismatic and colourful composers. Cyril Scott’s Viola Sonata of 1953 is a highly focused work, meticulously crafted and tautly unified; and the fluency, inventiveness and iridescence of the writing makes the Sonata compelling listening. An equal magnetism surrounds Granville Bantock’s Sonata no.3 in C major for Violin and Piano; composed at the end of its composer’s life, in 1946, it eschews the complex grandiloquence of some of his earlier works in favour a conciseness of form and simplicity of structure, yet Bantock’s hallmarks of a richly appointed texture and sweeping melodic lines are still present.
